Welcome to the WOW newsletter

September 2019

Hello Australian orchid community!

Thank you for your interest in the Wild Orchid Watch project. Wherever you are in Australia, we hope that you have had a chance to get out in your favourite patch of bushland to see this season’s orchids. In this edition of the WOW newsletter you can check out the new video, and read about our orchid monitoring fieldwork and testing the WOW app.

Introducing WOW - The Video

The ‘Introducing Wild Orchid Watch’ video was created to provide a 3 minute summary of the WOW project. Watch the video to find out what is special about this project, why we are calling on native orchid enthusiasts to download the WOW app, where to find more information and how to get involved. You can watch the WOW video on YouTube here. Please feel free to share with fellow orchid enthusiasts.

We had the pleasure of working with many people on this production. In particular, thank you to Sophie Thomson (WOW ambassador) and Professor Michelle Waycott (Chief Botanist at the State Herbarium of South Australia) for being so generous with their time and enthusiasm. BASEM3NT Studios directed and produced the video and were fantastic to work with. Thanks also to our partners, see them on the final slide of the video.

Monitoring Orchids

Thanks to an Australian Orchid Foundation grant, WOW ecologists are conducting orchid monitoring surveys in the Mount Lofty Ranges during the peak flowering season of August, September and October this year.

This research project will systematically survey wild orchid populations and their habitat context to gain detailed insights into the drivers of species occurrences, abundance and phenology. We will aim to determine which environmental and habitat condition parameters best predict the presence and status of orchid populations and communities through analysis of spatial and temporal changes in habitat configuration, management regime, vegetation communities and climate. We will also investigate how best to combine new, detailed information obtained through the WOW app and project with historical records of orchids to assess change.

This investigation will provide novel information on how broader ecosystem processes are impacting orchids via effects on disturbance levels, ecosystem composition and reproductive success. The results will reveal factors contributing to population decline or reproductive failure in orchids, which threaten their persistence and adaptive capacity in the context of climate change. This information will better inform how we should manage the habitats of orchids in a whole ecosystem context.

WOW App Development

As outlined in the Winter WOW Newsletter, the WOW app is being custom built at the University of Adelaide as an Australian orchid-specific project within iNaturalist.

All iNaturalist data can be viewed on the iNaturalist platform and on the Atlas of Living Australia. It is important to note that location data for sensitive species is obscured by these websites. Scientists and land managers will be able to complete an application process to access more detailed data.

See the Wild Orchid Watch Sensitive Species Guidelines, developed in consultation with academic and state government threatened species ecologists and data managers, on our website here.

WOW Field Trips - Get Involved!

On Saturday 7th September a very brisk morning in the Adelaide Hills greeted us as we congregated in Morialta Conservation Park to begin testing the WOW app. Native Orchid Society SA members, University of Adelaide staff and students and fellow orchid enthusiasts put the app through it’s paces. We found 10 species of orchids and gathered important information for the WOW technical team to use to improve and finesse the app.

We are looking forward to the second app-testing field trip on the 28th September.

Once we have ironed out any major platform-related errors and bugs, we will begin beta-testing. There will be opportunities for you to beta-test the WOW app and provide feedback online in the coming months. We will let you know the details soon.

WOW Photographic Scale Card

The WOW photographic card has been designed to use in conjunction with the WOW app to provide images with scale and colour information. We have posted WOW cards to orchid photographers and enthusiasts across Australia. Thank you to everyone who has sent in their photos via email, Instagram and Facebook. It is awesome to be able to share these photos and we can’t wait for the release of the WOW app so all your orchid sightings can be submitted, identified and stored in the one place!

Please contact us if you would like WOW photographic scale cards posted to you.

We would love to see you on socials Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
